ABSTRACT

One of the reasons for the formation of towns in the first instance was human gregariousness. Man is tensed between the desire to be solitary and the instinct to belong to the pack. The city was the means of bringing the two needs into a harmonious relationship. The remains of ancient cities indicate a recognition of the need for social intercourse in the provision of communal space - a recognized public zone. In cities like Athens it was the Agora; a public space designed for the exchange of goods, information and ideas.
