ABSTRACT

Perhaps the best way to define and describe peer monitoring is to borrow from the self-monitoring literature. Self-monitoring is often broken down into two behaviors: self observation and self-recording (Kanfer, 1971; Shapiro, 1996). In its most basic form, peer monitoring could also be limited to peer observation and peer recording. When self-monitoring is described in broader terms, (i.e., self-management), additional activities such as self-instruction, self-evaluation, and self-reinforcement are often included (Cole & Bambara, 1992). Similarly, peer evaluation, peer reinforcement, and peer instruction could be included in broader peer-assisted programs. Although some of these additional components are noted briefly, this chapter focuses on peer observation and recording.
