ABSTRACT
Our goal in this chapter is to provide an account for Chinese word identification, informed by recent research and reflecting principles that seem to underlie the results of this research. The first section discusses basic issues arising in an analysis of Chinese writing, and introduces the descriptive and theoretical vocabulary required for clear discussion. The second section summarizes the results of research that has pointed to a significant role for phonology in Chinese word reading. The third section describes a theory of word identification, developing further ideas published in Tan and Perfetti (1997) and Perfetti and Tan (1998).
