ABSTRACT
Since the 1960s compelling evidence has indicated that persons who suffer from major mental disorders (schizophrenia, major depression, bipolar disorder) are more likely than are non-disordered persons to commit crimes and to perpetrate violence. It is not clear, however, whether this is a new phenomenon, or whether persons with major disorders always behaved in this manner and it was only first documented in the 1960s.
