ABSTRACT

The meeting opened with talk we call, “topic finding.” Although finding a topic occurs in most conversations, it is less prolonged on formal occasions with clear agendas and designated leaders. Topic finding in our club is noteworthy because it offers evidence for this event’s negotiated nature. The talk on this night began as participants entered my home and gradually assembled their full complement in my family room. Thus, book talk finding commenced without all members present and did not include me. I remained in the kitchen, preparing the dinner. The conversation had a roaming, spontaneous quality, but it quickly touched on Angelou’s book.
