ABSTRACT

I want to thank Division 1 of the American Psychological Association for the invitation to speak today. It has been almost 50 years since I last spoke at an APA meeting, and nearly 70 years since I addressed this association as its president. What I want to do today is to tell you something about my life story, starting with my origins in Nebraska, continuing with a description of my graduate study at Columbia University, and focusing mostly on my career as a psychologist, which ended officially with my retirement in 1946, the same year that this APA division of general psychology was born.
