ABSTRACT

In chapters 4 and 5, ordinal test theory was used to introduce the calculation of total tied-rank scores for dichotomous and polytomous items as well as persons. In the case of dichotomous items, chapter 4 stressed the fact that total tied-rank scores for both items and persons are perfectly linearly correlated with the sums of the arbitrary, dichotomous integral scores, 0 and 1. This fact justifies the use of 0 and 1 scoring and implies that the consistency value for items ranking persons, αP, will be the same for each of the two methods of scoring. In the same way we need to consider, also, the consistency of persons ranking items, α1, which will also be the same for each of the two methods of scoring.
