ABSTRACT
The idea of evolution has long intrigued anthropologists. As we have seen, analogies have been drawn between the proliferation of species and the proliferation of cultures through time, as well as between the progressive development of complexity in organic systems and the persistent increase in man's ability to master his environment. Other more questionable parallels between biological and cultural processes have been offered as building blocks for the construction of a theory or theories of cultural evolution.
