ABSTRACT

Bulimia nervosa (BN) belongs to a group of eating disorders that encompasses several subgroups of disorders. The boundaries between subgroups and the terminology used to differentiate these subgroups has been in flux. Nevertheless, considerable literature (Beaumont, George, & Smart, 1976; Casper, Eckert, Halmi, Goldberg, & Davis, 1980; Garfmkel, Moldofsky, & Garner, 1980; Garner, Garfmkel, & O’Shaughnessy, 1985; Halmi & Falk, 1982; Herzog & Copeland, 1985; Strober, Salkin, Burroughs, & Morrell, 1982) suggests that certain factors distinguish subgroups of eating disordered patients. These factors include the amount of weight lost, type of pathological eating behavior, certain psychopathological characteristics, and neurobiological abnormalities.
