ABSTRACT

ELECTRICITY IS, IN SOME SENSES, ‘easy to do, hard to understand’. Children in nursery classes can join electrical components together to make a complete circuit, yet to explain what is going on within that circuit requires understanding of some very abstract concepts. This creates a problem for primary teachers: how can we help children to develop in their electrical understanding so that an electricity lesson at the end of KS2 looks qualitatively different from one in Foundation Stage, when we may be rather hazy about the concepts involved ourselves?
