ABSTRACT

The most commonly used version of the MMPI-2 is the printed booklet form, which appears in either softbound or hardcover form, and which consist of 567 items. Both the softbound and hardcover booklets are reusable and are commonly used for individual or group administrations. The hardcover booklet is more commonly used for laptop administration when hard surfaces such as a desk are not available. Whereas the softcover booklet requires a separate answer sheet, the hardcover booklet uses an answer sheet that is inserted over two pegs at the back of the book and follows a step-down format whereby each consecutive page reveals another column of answer spaces matched with the booklet column of corresponding questions. The columns use alternating colors of purple and black to assist the reader in matching the answer sheet to the appropriate page in the booklet. Because the step-down format reveals only one column of questions and answer spaces, the likelihood of misplacing a response to a specific question is reduced. This is especially useful when testing confused patients or individuals unaccustomed to taking tests. The order of the items are the same in the softcover and hardcover booklets, which was not the case with the original MMPI forms (see Friedman, Webb, & Lewak, 1989). Separate sets of templates are needed for hand scoring both of these forms of the MMPI-2. Note, however, that the answer sheets for the soft-and hardcover forms are not interchangeable for hand-scoring purposes. The MMPI-2 is available in Spanish in both the softcover and audiotape forms but not in the hardbound booklet version.
