ABSTRACT
This capacity [representational memory] may be considered a building block, if not a cornerstone, of cognitive development in man. Moreover, “object permanence”—the recognition that an object has continuity in time and space when not in view—must depend on the elemental capacity to form representations of the outside world and to base responses on those representations in the absence of the objects they represent.
