ABSTRACT
Ontogenetic adaptations may require the creation of structures and functions that are adaptively suitable at one stage but which may be unnecessary for or incompatible with adaptations at later stages. This requires a mechanism whereby the earlier characteristics can be eliminated, suppressed, or reorganized.
