ABSTRACT

[I] suggest that this [cognitive shock produced by shame affect], this momentary lapse in the smooth, normal functioning of the organism, is a major factor in the development of the self. The difference between the infant before the moment of shame (the infant in the moment of alert activity, of interest, excitement, or enjoyment) and the infant suddenly unable to function, this difference may be registered by the infant as a significant experience calling attention to and helping to define the self.
