ABSTRACT

As part of the Intersystems approach, the therapist has to be knowledgeable about a variety of dimensions (individual, couple, family of origin, etc.) that can complicate the sexual picture for a couple. Unfortunately, these dimensions can also be affected by a number of factors. One such factor is sexual misinformation. Masters and Johnson (1970) stated quite simply that the lack of sexual information contributed to sexual problems. The problem, however, is a bit more complex than stated by Masters and Johnson. Some of the information perpetuates the myths and complicates the problems a couple might have. Although society’s interest in sexuality may appear widespread, media and literature portray myths about sex. Further, what prevents people from uncovering accurate information may be their fears and embarrassment about the topic or specific myth.
