ABSTRACT

The use of bibliotherapy has been well documented in sex therapy (see, for example, Weeks & Gambescia, 2002). Bibliotherapy involves the use of material to stimulate new thoughts or actions in our clients. It could involve reading books or Internet-based material, viewing tapes, or watching selected TV shows or any form of media that would be considered psychoeducational. Of course, the most common connotation of bibliotherapy is that of reading books, although other forms of educational media are rapidly growing. Bibliotherapy should have the effect of helping to dispel misinformation, providing accurate information, giving couples new perspectives (attitudes), supporting trying new behaviors, suggesting new ideas or things they had not thought about, giving them permission to try “forbidden” behaviors, and many more functions.
