ABSTRACT

The Intersystems approach renders a comprehensive assessment and provides a flexible treatment strategy customized for each unique couple. Far from being overly complex, this approach can be easily managed with the appropriate case formulation. The following format for conceptualizing sexual difficulties is based on the Intersystems case formulation developed by Weeks and Treat (1992). This format for case formulation has three main sections: (1) presenting problem definition, (2) Intersystems assessment, and (3) treatment plan and strategies. Thus, it provides an analysis of the problem and offers treatment strategies examining individual biological, psychological, and intergenerational components; the couple’s interactional patterns and dynamics; and sociocultural factors surrounding and impacting the couple. We will review each section of the case formulation template and then using a clinical vignette, giving an example of how to complete the case formulation. An example of the case formulation format is provided in Figure 4.1.
