ABSTRACT

Assessment in sex therapy is a critical part of the therapeutic process. Information gathered in an assessment frequently results in how one conducts the treatment process, including guiding decisions in who participates in treatment, the structure of the sessions, and the interventions planned. Assessment in sex therapy can be formalized via the use of specific measures or instruments or be more informal, via the taking of a psychosocial history or examining behavior. This chapter provides an overview of a variety of assessments, both physiological and psychological. It presents reliability and validity information about current scales as well as a discussion of the relative strengths and weaknesses of the scales covered.
