ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to give the reader some of the basic tools, skills, and resources to be successful in sex therapy. We will be covering the topics of handouts, sensate-focus exercises, genograms, and homework. Our intent is to give readers the practical information they need to implement the treatment strategies described earlier in this volume. We would like to remind the reader once again that all sensate focus and homework exercises are to be performed with the attitude of learning to give and receive pleasure and should be balanced so that each partner receives something he or she wants. The early literature and much of the recent literature fail to recognize the systemic nature of these exercises. The systemic nature of sex therapy is emphasized throughout this volume and in all our earlier work referenced here.
