ABSTRACT

Between 1970 and the late 1990s, American moviegoers had been offered depictions of a wide variety of gay men-from a group of bitchy friends in The Boys in the Band, to a heroic AIDS patient in Philadelphia, to a dapper high school teacher in In & Out. It wasn’t until 2005, though, that Hollywood provided the media-consuming public with a film that focused specifically on how a same-sex couple experienced the joys and the sorrows of being in love across a span of many years.
