ABSTRACT

The promotion of the spiritual and moral development of pupils was regarded, until fairly recently, as the more or less exclusive preserve of religious education and of personal, social and moral education lessons in the school timetable. It is now increasingly being recognised that all subjects of the curriculum can play a part in this central aspect of education. It is also recognised that many subjects probably still fail to do so. The Office for Standards in Education discussion paper (OFSTED, 1994) stated: ‘To move towards a position where subjects see themselves in this way might seem to require a sea-change in attitudes and approaches, but certainly the potential is there.’
