ABSTRACT
As one of the fastest growing immigrant populations in America, Asian Americans provide a unique challenge to our understanding of diversity. As a result of the Immigration Act of 1964 and the elimination of the national origins quota, large numbers of Koreans and Japanese were allowed to enter the United States. Ten years later with the ending of the Vietnam War, America, in response to the devastation of Vietnamese and Cambodian society, began to admit large numbers of Southeast Asian refugees. Between 1975 and 1995 one million refugees had arrived in America, some of them children without parents (Rong and Preissle, 1997). And in ever increasing numbers, Chinese immigrants from Hong Kong and mainland China have joined longstanding Chinese communities in American cities.
