ABSTRACT

A great deal has been talked about the place of subject knowledge in primary education. To some, teachers’ knowledge at their own level of the major concepts, principles, skills and content of established disciplines such as mathematics or science is seen as of paramount importance and as having been neglected in both preservice and inservice education. To others, that ‘high level’ knowledge has been seen as irrelevant to the task of teaching young children.
