ABSTRACT

The appointment of Miss Audrey Bambra as Principal of Chelsea from 1 September 1958 changed the custom of employing a Chelsea Old Student to lead the institution, which had been the practice since its inception. Born on 13 July 1917, she was educated first at Bournemouth High School for Girls, later renamed Talbot Heath School (1926 to 1935) where she was influenced by an outstanding Head Mistress, Miss C F Stocks, MA. Secondly, she attended Anstey Physical Training College (1935 to 1938) when Miss Marion Squire was Principal. Miss Squire was a dedicated professional and a strict disciplinarian, but also a woman with a great sense of humour who set and expected high standards of work and conduct from her staff and from her students.
