What kind of thinking are we teaching?

There is a deep-seated confusion in society over the purposes of education, and even those people who have thought long and carefully about its purpose often cannot agree. Coupled with this is a certain dissatisfaction felt by many people who are involved in education. The direction in which education should go is something that society finds it difficult to be confident about.
