ABSTRACT

Validated self-review can be a powerful and effective mechanism for quality development, harnessing the internal capability of the institution for self-development and self-renewal. At the same time it increases the capacity for redefinition and regeneration. This is the evolutionary paradigm, the pattern for renewal and rebirth. Quality which fails to evolve and reinvent itself becomes endangered. There are parallels in selective breeding, improvement through development of the best quality while inferior quality withers away. Validated self-review is inherently synergistic. It works through cooperation and partnership, the operation of an alliance for quality in which the partners have complementary roles to play, combining their efforts in pursuit of a shared goal. The goal is the enhancement of best practice and the eradication of poor quality which constrains learning potential. (See Deming's view outlined in the Introduction.)
