ABSTRACT

This book is a practical guide for teachers, but it is not a prescriptive ‘cookbook’ that tells you ‘how to do it’. The purpose of the book is to alert you to possibilities and to provide a practical framework for implementing the different approach presented here. The proposals are based on solid research and grounded in the theory of effective teaching and learning. Throughout the book, I have cited instances of research in the case studies to illustrate that these ideas work. Not only do they work, but their effects carry over to other areas of school life, benefiting the individuals and institutions in many contexts. However, I would not presume to say ‘This is how it must be done’; I am more comfortable saying ‘This is how it could be done, try it and see.’
