ABSTRACT
The continuing development of the secretarial role in higher education administration and the general context within which changes have occurred is compared with developments in Wessex University, an ‘old’ university in Southern England. The functioning of academic departments only will be considered since the managerial structures and staff profiles of central administration departments closely reflect organizational hierarchies in other employment sectors.
