ABSTRACT

Using diagnostic criteria from the DSM-IV, prevalence of lifetime alcohol abuse in U.S. adults has been estimated at 17.8%, with 4.7% reporting alcohol abuse within the past year (Hasin, Stinson, Ogburn, & Grant, 2007). Approximately 12.5% adults have met criteria for alcohol dependence in their lifetimes and 3.8% have met criteria within the past year. Factors associated with risk for alcohol use disorders include being white or Native American, male, young, and unmarried. Treatment rates for those with alcohol use disorders have declined slightly over the past several years.
