ABSTRACT

An essential step in the process of developing a simulation exercise is a careful analysis of the job, organization, and setting that will be simulated. For convenience, we use the short-hand term, situation analysis, to refer to this step, but the reader will soon know that we mean much more than analyzing just information about any one aspect of the job or organization. This step is designed to gather the following types of information:

• The industry in which the entire exercise will be set, for example, a public agency (e.g., city, state, federal, or international), a private company (e.g., manufacturing, financial, or service company), or nonprofit organization (e.g., foundation, United Way, Youth Center).
