ABSTRACT

Interviewing for research purposes must follow a plan related to the objectives one wants to achieve in the data collection. It is not sufficient merely to meet with people and conduct an informal chat. One should plan the interview in great detail and write down the questions in modified questionnaire form. This type of data collection tool is called an interview protocol or schedule. For some purposes I also use an interview guide that is merely a list of five or six topics. The subject of this chapter is protocols and schedules which are more elaborate forms of instrument. The purpose of this chapter is to provide guidance on how to develop an effective interview protocol.
