ABSTRACT
One can usefully distinguish between three types of ethnically divided societies. These three types derive from specific historical beginnings, different kinds of problems for state policies, and distinct forms of resistance and conflict resolution. They are: a) indigenous peoples, b) immigration societies, and c) nationalities in competition. All three types can be found within the same state boundary, as in Canada.
