ABSTRACT

During the phase when infants are supposed to be mindlessly scribbling, they imbue their marking actions with profound expressive and representational intention. The so called ‘scribble’ in Figure 2 is a serious investigation of visual structure, already loaded with emotion. Virtually all accounts of drawing lump together, under the generic title ‘scribbling’, a vast range of different types of drawing, and each one worthy of serious consideration. For many children, these drawings are products of a systematic investigation, rather than haphazard actions, of the expressive and representational potential of visual media.
