ABSTRACT
In this chapter we want to explore a critical issue for British education at the end of the twentieth century, the pressures towards various kinds of separate provision which could variously be called diversity, increased choice, separatism, exclusion or stratification in schooling. We will consider these issues in relation to gender and ‘race’ first and use a consideration of class issues to problematize the notion of ‘choice’.
