ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses upon partnerships in which teachers and tutors from higher education institutions work together. (The term ‘universities’ will be used to encompass the range of higher education.) They are particularly suited to collaboration since both are in the business of knowledge creation. Though the historically generated divide and alienation between ‘scholars’ and ‘practitioners’ who work in very different cultures and respond to different demands has been well documented (Day, 1991; Cuban, 1992; Lieberman; 1992) there are increasing numbers of successful partnerships at pre-service and in-service levels, particularly those aimed at enhancing the knowledge creation capacities of individuals and professional communities.
