ABSTRACT
This chapter highlights the importance to good teaching of self-confidence, professional learning cultures and committed leadership. It focuses upon the broad policy contexts within which teachers work; conditions for teaching and learning in the classroom; the effects of school culture; the role of the principal in professional development; and leadership development itself.
