ABSTRACT
Jiauzhan Normal School in Shandong province, China, prepares teachers to work in primary schools. It caters for some 1 000 student teachers, all in the age range 15 to 20. The visitor to the school is struck first of all by the neat, orderly appearance of the campus, with its modern buildings and attractive grounds. Students, who all wear multicoloured track suits, live in hostels nearby. Relationships between them and the staff of the school seem relaxed and friendly.
