ABSTRACT

I have referred to the role of consultant as distinct from that of coordinator. Coordinators do not automatically act as consultants whereas a subject consultant in school is probably the coordinator. Consultancy is seen by many music educators to be the most effective method of achieving curriculum development and change. During the early 1980s, Reading University School of Education pioneered a music consultancy course which was then emulated and developed by several other institutions and LEA advisory teams. Although many of the original courses have now ceased to exist the resonance of their work is strongly present in the work of many advisers, teacher educators and schoolbased teachers.
