ABSTRACT

Lists of book titles, atlases and videos date very quickly so instead, this chapter lists the range of resources which will help children have a variety of interesting and relevant geographical experiences covering the Orders and hopefully beyond. You will probably not be able to afford to have everything in your school, therefore the list is designed to help you plan, prioritise and select those items which will be most appropriate for your school. Ideas are also included to guide you towards the location of suitable resources. When you need specific addresses and contact points you can use a number of sources:

■ Geography resources are regularly reviewed in Primary Geographer published by the Geographical Association. It often contains articles relating to geographical resources;

■ One of the largest and most up to date exhibition of resources will be found each year at the Geographical Association’s Annual Conference. This is held during the Easter holiday at different venues around the country each year;

■ LEA advisers and centres keep information about what is available; ■ The Times Educational Supplement contains resource reviews and the occasional Geography

supplements give even more details; ■ Professional journals such as Child Education often review resources; ■ University Departments of Education and training colleges aim to keep an up to date selection of

resources across the primary subjects; ■ Many organisations keep information on resources and suppliers related to their area of interest. Urban

studies and Development Education Centres are examples; ■ County Council planning offices, tourist information offices and local studies centres in libraries are

excellent starting points for collecting local maps, plans, photographs etc. ■ More and more information is becoming available on the web. Use this if you have access; ■ Keep in touch with other geography coordinators and share ideas. They will have tried things out and

know if they work; ■ Be aware of non-educational sources. For example, the local environmental group can probably help

with your locality studies.
