ABSTRACT

In terms of text, the author of Time Travel certainly knows how the openings of stories work. From the opening question which draws us immediately into the story, through the flashback describing the family argument, to the lovely description of the time on the train, we know we are reading something by someone who can write. At the sentence level, the writer is able to use a range of sentence types-simple, compound and complex. Sentence length varies so that the piece ‘flows’ and direct speech is used sparingly for excellent effect-try reading it aloud to appreciate the techniques which have been used. The piece reads like the opening of a good story-it is certainly extremely successful.
