ABSTRACT

Before looking at the different kinds of instrumental activity through which learning takes place, some thought needs to be given to the choice of instruments for classroom use. Instruments suggested for nursery use are often little more than toys. They should be ‘real’ instruments and of the best quality that can be managed. A mistaken idea is that they need to be small to handle; this doesn’t follow. In some cases, larger instruments are easier to play than smaller ones. A range of size is essential in order to produce a range of sound. Although subsidiary to the sound considerations, the aesthetic appeal of an instrument in itself is important if children are to be encouraged to enjoy using it.
