ABSTRACT
In this chapter, using a case study of a suburban high school, I will illustrate how metarules maintain stasis. The school, Willetton Senior High School, sought exemptions from the official rules, gained some but not all that it wanted, tested the limits, broke several meta-rules and finally was steered back into the mainstream.
