ABSTRACT

Nations have traditionally employed symbols and metaphors to signify what they wish to show as their distinctive characteristics. Englishness has been variously represented by the Cross of St George (now in face-paint form), John Bull and, perhaps rather unfortunately, by Roast Beef. This final chapter is an attempt to explore some of the symbols of nationality that are embedded in, or associated with, our curriculum, and to suggest that these may present some problems in terms of values and of equality.
