ABSTRACT
The terms sport and physical education have often been used synonymously. Physical education has developed from a games tradition where it (games) was thought to train the moral qualities of the individual. In the nineteenth century, only boys were taught games, with the aim of developing the qualities of self-control, vigour and decision of character. It was only after the Education Act of 1870 that physical education for girls was considered.
