ABSTRACT
To introduce this section of the book one lesson is highlighted to develop the tensions between Jeff’s agenda and the students’ ways of coping with their schooling experiences. The students appear to be aware of the teacher’s purposes for the activity but are unable to accept the validity of the task. This chapter uses a classroom episode to begin to present schooling from the students’ perspective.
