Student A says, ‘The pattern isn’t being produced by electrons, but by light given off from the hot cathode.’ He argues that he can show this to be the case by holding a magnet next to the pattern. Light is not affected by a magnetic field, and so he argues the pattern will stay unchanged. However, to his surprise, when he carries out the experiment, the pattern is deflected.
