ABSTRACT

The problem of defining the nature of ‘educational research’ has been dealt with in Chapter 3. As we have seen, the term does not mean the same thing to everyone in the field of education, and no single definition is universally acceptable. This may be due to the huge range of often disparate activities that form the education process. This chapter briefly describes the emergence of research activities in the field of education, and outlines the work of a few individuals who have exerted a significant influence on the development of educational research.
