ABSTRACT

The headteacher management competencies and competency-based assessment in general can be used in a number of significant ways to benefit headteachers and schools. Esp (1993) describes 30 or more ways to use a competence framework. To date, the major applications of competencies with heads have been for:

• selection and recruitment; • management development and training; • individual (self) development; • team development; and • headteacher appraisal.
