ABSTRACT

Journals, as a window into students’ thoughts, have demonstrated how the attitudes of open-mindedness, responsibility and whole-heartedness can be detected and understood. In a similar vein, journal entries that illustrate any of the five phases of reflection (suggestions, problem, hypothesis, reasoning and testing) can also be uncovered in students’ writing. As a consequence, journal entries allow one to identify and view these phases and are one way of determining the presence of reflection and how it is developed and used over time.
