ABSTRACT

In this essay, I attempt to capture some elements of an important period in modern curriculum history, to try to untangle myths and realities and to raise questions, if only in passing, about the influence of Army education on the post-war education system. This essay relies on perceptions and images to untangle the way in which a new form of pedagogy may have been created within a massive adult education programme in the 1940s and in myth and reality is associated with the post-war project to change society and its schools.
